The computer virus has unfortunately become as familiar as the common cold. It can cause a lot of damage and frustration. Every computer user is susceptible and your best lines of defense are caution and good updated anti-virus software. Do not open suspicious email attachments i.e. those with double extensions, especially from people you know. Contrary to popular belief, most viruses are transmitted by email to friends. Some of the most "successful" viruses propagate by emailing themselves from infected computers to the names in the address book. You should also be aware of hoaxes. There are many email chain letters that tell people to search out and delete a file on their computer. This is almost always a useful file that is part of the computer's operating system. They then tell the unsuspecting person to "email this warning to everyone you know." That alone should tell you this is a hoax! This page will keep you informed of the latest outbreaks and can be used as a source of learning for both viruses and hoaxes.
